Stonepaw nodded thoughtfully. This was all interesting. He had never really though about how useful all of this knowledge would be, but then the more you need the better you are. He watched them all, taking it in. "Wow... I think I get it," he concluded.
(Sorry for the crappy post. I am SO tired.)

"But there's more! Those healthy ones, although they may give really great meals, they are a pain to kill! They don't give up, like that deer did earlier. And that old one? It's sick. You can tell by the way it drinks. And eats. So if you try to catch that type of coyote, the sick kind, we could get sick. All the others are okay. You got all that?" Rockfall asked Stonepaw, wondering if he piled too much information on him at once.

Stonepaw nodded and tried to sort through the information that was clouding his head. "So do we eat the healthy ones that aren't to strong? Cause if we can't eat strong ones and we can't eat sick ones, what do we eat?" He shook his head. He was sure once Rockfall explained he would get all this, it was just new and confusing.

"Well, if about 3 warriors team up on a strong healthy one, you can eat it. So basically, you can eat any healthy Coyote you can kill. But never eat sick ones. And if we didn't eat the strong, healthy adults, and the sick coyote, then we would eat the adolescents. They are always good, at least as far as we know." Rockfall explained, hoping it made sense to Stonepaw. Rockfall took a look around everywhere, to make sure there weren't too many strong coyote. If there were, Rockfall wouldn't be able to show Stonepaw how strong they were, without killing it.

A little light bulb went off in Stonepaw's head, it was all becoming clear! Eagerly he nodded his head in understanding. "I think I have it. Well at least I think." He smiled foolishly. Quietly he took another look at all the coyotes. He could defiantly tell them apart. Strong and healthy ones were tall with shiny pelts. Their muscles flexed every step they took. The sick ones were weak looking, bent over with shaggy pelts. Their heads were bent down and a wheeze was uttered every once in a while. "What about pups?" He questioned. Far to the right a den was visible with little yelps escaping the mouth. Even though it made sense there were still a few thoughts he had on the subject.

"Pups are special. Most of us don't have the heart to kill, so we leave them with their mother. But we don't kill mothers, either, because it isn't right to kill coyote that can raise up knew food for us. So the best we can do is to respect their life cycle, pups, to adolescents, to adults, so they can be killed. But not as pups. If they die as pups, the Coyote's population may decline, and we may end up living off of deer and rabbits and those other animals we eat." Rockfall explained, hoping that made as much sense as the rest of the lectures he explained.

Stonepaw nodded and understood, to him killing a baby deer was no problem. It was life. But Coyotes were different, they were more like kin, though less smart and unable to speak. It would feel wrong to kill one, it would feel like killing one of his own. Also if all the pups were killed then were would others come from?

Rockfall smiled. Stonepaw learned fast! "At least we so far know that deer won't run out! Deer herds come from many directions! But Coyote settle for a little bit. That is why we don't kill them as much. We try to save the Coyote, but we also like their taste, so as long as you see nice Coyotes to catch and kill, go for it!" Rockfall finished, finished with the lesson. He would give a test to stonepaw to see how much he was actually listened. In fact, he would have to get used to daily tests, because half of Stonepaw's grade is on if he actually listens to Rockfall.

Stonepaw nodded, though he honestly doubted that he could catch a coyote. He got up to stretch his aching legs when the unthinkable happened, the ledge beneath him quivered and shook. Then suddenly it gave way and tumbled down the slop, carrying the wide-eyed Stonepaw with it. He gave out a yelp and tumbled down the hill, head over heel. Finally he landed at the bottom, laying sprawled out, legs pointing ever which way. He groaned but stayed still, his legs aching even more than before.

Rockfall: "Stonepaw!" I howled at the top of my lungs, and expertly leaped down from falling rock to falling rock, making sure I did not stay on a rock for longer than 2 seconds. It was land, find a rock, leap. Land, find a rock, leap. I did this several times before I made it to the bottom. Sadly, Stonepaw beat me there, letting gravity take him. I crouched down next to Stonepaw. I had heard him groan when I hit the floor, so I figured he was still alive. But I checked to make sure anyway. I placed one ear on Stonepaw's chest, listening for a heartbeat. After everything settled down and I could hear well, I listened for a heartbeat.
