“Shhh. It's okay honey, it'll be over soon. Shh, just push again.” That was the reassuring voice of Toka, the soon-to-be father of three pups. “Shhh it's okay....it's okay.” Toka's mate, Shina, was in the long processes of giving birth to his pups. So far it didn't seem to be going well, it was taking way too long. She had been at it since sunset, it was almost sunrise now. Shina was exhausted and out of breath, she didn't know how much more she could take.
“Ahhhh! Help! Toka....”
“Shhh, it's okay.” Suddenly he gasped, “Shina! Shina! Ones coming! It's coming now!” He quickly and gently picked up the pup and licked it clean. It was a female! But she was so tiny, too tiny. He gently lay the red spotted pup by her mother. “Isn't she beautiful?” But he was interrupted by another yelp from Shina.
“Ahhhh! It's too much!”
“Shina calm down and push! Another one is coming!”
“Aaarrrggg!”
“Shhh. It's going to be okay,” he kept telling her over and over. A soft moving sound told him that the second one was out. Again he ran and gently licked the pup. A male. He set the red patched pup by his sister. “See Shina, your almost done. Just one more to go, one more.”
“Gahh! One more...only one more,” she gasped. About ten minutes later, when Shina was gasping for air and crying in pain the third one arrived.
“Shina! It's okay...You're done. It's all over.” Shina sighed with relief, she was done. Toka picked up the last little on, a male. He set the pups down.
“They're beautiful,” Shina gasped. “We should name them.”
“It's okay, we can name them in the morning. You need to sleep. Shina weakly nodded her head and closed her eyes, sleep quickly took her. Toka looked gleefully at the pups. The first born, male, looked just like him. He was gray with red spots and red paw-bands. The second born, female, looked just like her mother. She was white with light red splotches all over her. The third born, male, confused him though. He looked like neither him nor Shina. He was black, like coal black,, not gray or white. He had red X's on his body, where he got those Toka did not know. He also had a red scar-like marking on his face. The only thing that this pup had that resembled his parents was red bands, like him. Toka sighed and shook his head, genes and that crap confused him. He was just happy to have a family. The only problem was the pups looked so weak, they were too tiny. He had seen regular strong pups, and they were about twice the size of his.
Shina slept from sunrise to midnight. She awoke still worn out but much better than the day before. Toka had fallen asleep too, his gentle snoring was interrupted by a scream.
“No! No no no no! No....” Shina wailed. Toka jerked awake.
“Wha-What is it Shina?” he questioned.
“Th-th-they are dead!” she cried, pointing with her tail at the first born male and the female. “They are gone! My poor poor babies.....” Shina started to sob. Sure enough, when Toka looked, the two pups lay stiff and unmoving. The third though was still breathing.
“Ohhh...” he gasped. “Oh no...”
“And we didn't even get to name them!” Shina continued to cry.
“Well then we better name this one,” Toka exclaimed, trying to point out to Shina that at least she still had one pup. Shina shook her head, flinging tears everywhere.
“Hmfh,” she sniffled, trying to be brave. “His markings are strange.... They don't look like either of us....” she said, slightly confused.
“I know,” Toka said nodding. “And for special markings he needs a special name. You decide,” he gently urged her. Shina sniffled some more before answering.
“I-I think we should call him Kamin. Kamin.....” She gently nudged the pup towards her for food.
“Kamin,” Toka whispered. “The perfect name for our little survivor.”
